/GPS4us News/ An airline crew of a plane approaching Moscow was forced to make belly landing using a passenger’s pocket GPS device, instead of the airports navigation system.
A Tu-204, a modern Russian airliner, was returning from a flight to Egypt on Monday when it needed to make an emergency landing, during a heavy fog and ended up crashing in the woods near Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport. The plan had carried over 200 passengers to Egypt and arrived there safely, on the return flight only the crewmembers were aboard the plane. The crewmembers were injured and the aircraft was damaged.
An investigation is underway focusing on the navigation method used to land the aircraft. Yet Domodedovo is equipped with advanced navigation systems that allow planes to land during harsh weather conditions. The crew on board was unable to reach air traffic control, as protocol dictates, and switched to manual guidance for their crash-landing.
