Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Mariamoba
Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates on August 28 one of the twelve major festivals of the year – Mariamoba.
The festive services were held in all functioning Churches of Georgia.
Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is set by Church for a long time. It is mentioned in the writings of St. Augustine and Hieronymus.
Especially this holiday was celebrated in an Orthodox church in the 6th century after the victory Byzantine emperor over the Persians in Mauritius. Universal celebration of it was set since 582.
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the second most important holiday of the Orthodox Church after the Resurrection. Not in vain this day is called the Mother of God of Easter. As the Gospel tells, it was the second Victory over death and hell, won by not a heavenly guest – the God-man, but the Earth’s Virgin – the purest and most perfect of all the people, and yet one of us, the earth-born.
Day of the Assumption of Mary is preceded by one of four multi-day Fasts – Dormition Fast. It is set in imitation of the Mother of God, that all her life, and especially before her Assumption spent time in prayer and fasting.
Currently, the country is home for 4, 4 million of people, 84 % of whom are Orthodox Christians, more than 5 % – the representatives of other Christian denominations, more than 9 percent – are Muslims.
